Mary Hricko Obituary

Mrs. Mary (Marshalla) Hricko, formerly of Peckville, North Wilkes-Barre, and most recently of Kingston, passed into eternal life Sunday afternoon in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, following a recent illness.

Born on Sunday, February 10, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, she just celebrated her ninety-fifth birthday a week prior to her passing.  Mary was the last of three children and only daughter to the late Michael and Elizabeth (Vajda) Marshalla.

Educated in the Lackawanna County schools, she was a graduate of the former Blakeley High School, class of 1946.

Following the family's relocation to the Wyoming Valley, they established their family homestead in North Wilkes-Barre on Court Street.  In her youth, Mrs. Hricko would walk a few blocks to her employment in the valley's garment industry with the former dress factories on Darling Street.

She met and eventually would marry the love of her life, Edward who was from the town of Sturges, also in Lackawanna County; a few miles from where she was raised.

Following their marriage, the couple made roots also in North Wilkes-Barre, establishing their family home on Madison Street.  It was here they would raise two beautiful daughters and witness the birth of four generations of children.

Devoted to their Christian faith, both Edward and Mary were previously active with their church, Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Wilkes-Barre.  Mrs. Hricko could often be seen assisting in the kitchens of both the church parlor for various church gatherings or at the congregation's picnic grove in Nuangola.  She also held membership in the Dorcas Society at Saint Matthew.

Mrs. Hricko was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Edward E. Hricko on November 21, 2013.  At the time of Mr. Hricko's passing, the couple shared sixty-three years of married life together.  Also preceding her were her brothers; Mr. Michael Marshalla on January 2, 2018 and more recently Mr. Edward Marshalla on October 26, 2022.

Left to cherish all the beautiful memories they keep of their mother are Mary's daughters, Nancy Divers and her companion Tony Romanoski, with whom Mrs. Hricko previously resided and Mary Beth Soltis along with her husband John of Sugarloaf Township.  Grandchildren; Marc Divers and his wife Heather; Jason Soltis and his wife Sylvia and Reverend Jennifer Soltis;  Great-Grandchildren, including Shelby McGovern and her husband Tyler; Alec Divers and his fiance, Kaitlyn Corkell, Noah Divers; David Soltis; Lydia Soltis and Warren Soltis;  Great-Great Grandchildren, Elly, Ayla and Brody McGovern;  Sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ellen L. Marshalla of Pringle and Mrs. Theresa Hanichak of Whitehall; Several generations of nieces and nephews, fellow congregation members and dear friends.

The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the staff and residents of Tiffany Court Assisted Living Center in Kingston for their care and the love shown their mother these past six months.  The people, activities and events there kept Mary smiling until the end.  Bingo!

Concelebrated funeral services for Mrs. Hricko will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 663 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.  The Reverend Peter J. Haenftling, pastor will serve as principal celebrant and Mrs. Hricko's granddaughter, the Reverend Jennifer Soltis will serve as concelebrant.

Interment next to her beloved husband will follow with prayers of committal in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, PA Route #415, Dallas.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to join Mrs. Hricko's family for visitation and shared remembrances directly at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.

In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations are humbly requested in Mrs. Hricko's memory to Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church Operating Fund, 663 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18705.
